Number 1 – Your Mindset

THIS is your biggest obstacle!

If anything is going to stand in your way, this is it. Firstly, you need to be clear about what you want. We recently spoke to someone who had never considered what she wanted her life to look like in 5 years time! She just knew she wanted it to be different from now somehow.

You never set out on a journey without knowing roughly where you are trying to get to, do you? We may not always know what the route will be, but start with a vision of what you want and it will help you
get there.

It seems so simple, but it can be very powerful to pause and consider ‘what do I want my life to look like in one, two, five years time?’

If you know it involves more travelling, where is it you think you would like to go? Grab a map, write a list. You need to know what’s driving you.

Your mindset is key

Are you keeping an eye on your own mind?

Your mind is probably raising more objections than solutions for you right now – even though it’s equally capable of doing both. Imagine if a friend came to you with your problems – I bet you would be able to offer them all sorts of useful suggestions and guidance, not to mention support, encouragement and understanding.

It’s always easier to come up with answers when its someone else’s dilemma, but let’s look at some of the typical objections which may nag at you whenever you get the notion that maybe you CAN travel more and work from where you like.

  • It isn’t possible to take vacations whenever you like. It just isn’t practical
  • That sort of lifestyle would cost a fortune. I don’t have that sort of money
  • I don’t have the skills to do that – I’m not very technically or business minded
  • It’s for young people; I’m too old to do something like that now
  • No one else I know is doing it. It’s unrealistic to think that I could be any different
  • I’ve got kids. I can’t just take them out of school
  • My partner has a full time job. I can’t leave him/her behind
  • I like the idea but I wouldn’t know where to start
  • My business would fail, I’d lose my clients
  • It’s too good to be true, no one could really live like that
  • I just can’t do it

There are ways round every one of these objections that re-position

‘it’s not possible’ into ‘there is a way’.
The issue is; can you see them?

Have a go. Do it now. Can you find any solutions to these obstacles?

Even if there are some issues that you simply can’t see a way round, the fact that you were willing to give it a go says a lot about you. It’s that sort of problem-solving that will open up possibilities all around you.

No one has all the answers all of the time. Sometimes we just have to figure it out as we go along. And next time that problem comes up, we’ll know exactly what to do.

Keeps us on our toes, right? Keeps us thinking, experiencing, living. The sleepwalking we do in an easy life probably isn’t that good for us, from the perspective of growing and developing as people. Keeping things comfortable isn’t going to fire us up, push us to be creative and innovate in the same way that adapting to a new environment and resolving unfamiliar situations will.

The key thing here is – do you believe it is possible that one day, in the not too distant future, you could be spending several weeks or even months every year travelling around different countries, immersing yourself in different cultures, experiencing the freedom of working remotely, enjoying magnificent scenery and throwing yourself into inspiring activities?

Or do you think it’s just a fantasy?

The only things standing between you working

…are what you THINK and what you are willing to DO about it.

If there is any part of you that has the slightest inkling that this might just work, then we have a great starting point!

If you don’t believe it’s possible, you’ve got a big mountain to climb, because you make possible what you believe you can do.

Remember, there are too many people living like this for it to be a pipedream. You just haven’t met any of us yet!

Hoping for some answers to those questions? Here are our thoughts:

  • It isn’t possible to take vacations whenever you like. It just isn’t practical

There is a big difference between vacation and a lifestyle whereby you can travel where you like, for as long as you like. For a start, you will have to have established a way of working which allows you to provide services or complete projects remotely. You’d be surprised what skills you already have which are perfectly suited to this model of working, whether you have an existing static business or even if you have spent much of your life being employed by other people.

  •

  • That sort of lifestyle would cost a fortune. I don’t have that sort of money

It’s easy to assume this, but there are ways of having a VERY nice standard of living on a surprisingly low budget. There are plenty of tricks and inside tips to making the most of your money but the fact is it usually costs us a great deal more to live our usual ‘home’ existence than it does to have a better quality of life somewhere else. So whether you want to retreat for the dreary winter months or relocate to the sunshine for a few peaceful weeks in the summer there are options to keep the costs down and the experiences flowing.
  •

  • I don’t have the skills to do that- I’m not very technically minded or business minded

With any new way of working there will plenty to learn. Since setting up our business we’ve had to learn about marketing, advertising, website design, copy writing, product creation, book-keeping, e-commerce, video editing…the list goes on! There will be ways you can adapt your existing business or skills to suit a more flexible working pattern. It depends how willing you are to give this a go in order to create a more desirable life for yourself. Most things are possible if you are ready to commit to them. And for those things which you can’t do by yourself, you get help.
  •

  • It’s for young people; I’m too old to do something like that now

I know it can be tempting to think that it’s easier or more accessible for people with different circumstances than you but there will be a whole host of challenges whatever your situation might be, and plenty of ways to overcome them.
  •

  • No one else I know is doing it. It’s unrealistic to think that I could be any different

More and more people are realising how accessible this lifestyle is and taking that first step. It’s incredible! (Take a look at the card I bought in a popular supermarket – the idea is going mainstream!!)

There are more and more people like us springing up on the Internet offering to help – it’s because they have done it and can share their learning, and because there is a huge thirst for people to achieve it themselves. Have a look around the Internet, search terms like ‘location independent’, ‘VA’ ‘digital nomad’ ‘work and travel’ and see what you can find. There are a lot of people living their dreams and sharing their experiences – so why shouldn’t you?

  •

  • I’ve got kids. I can’t just take them out of school

There are so many options available to help you and so many inspiring case studies that we can’t do them justice in this introduction! What we can say is that it is awe-inspiring some of the adventures families all over the globe are having. The kids get a top-notch education and the parents earn a living on the road. Whether you want to do it for a few months, a year, a few years… there are families that have already done it and plenty of resources you can draw on.

  •

  • My partner has a full time job. I can’t leave them behind

Your plans for a more flexible lifestyle may take some time to fully blossom, especially if you have the wishes of a partner to take into account. However, you may be surprised by how straightforward it is to build a lifestyle that you can both enjoy, and that fits both of your needs. Start by being clear what priorities you both have. They are probably very similar; you may just be approaching them from different directions. Nothing is set in stone; adapt a way that works for you and who knows what changes may come about for both of you in time?
  •

  • I like the idea but I wouldn’t know where to start

There is plenty of help available, because, like you, everyone had to start somewhere. Luckily for you there is a wealth of help and guidance available through blogs, forums and coaching programmes designed to relieve the headaches and uncertainty and get you from a) to b) as smoothly as possible.
  •

  • My business would fail; I’d lose my clients

If you have a business already you’ve already resolved one hurdle; you are able to generate money for yourself. But sometimes we can turn this into as much of a tie as being employed by someone else! There are tweaks and changes that can be made to most businesses to give you more flexibility to run things from wherever you choose, for some of the year at least. It will vary from business to business, but if you spend at least some of your time a) at a desk or b) ‘managing’ rather than ‘doing’ then we have plenty of potential to work with.
  •

  • It’s too good to be true, no one could really live like that

It can seem hard to believe, that’s for sure. But the Internet has a lot to answer for and it’s incredible the freedom latest technology can give us. All I can say is, we do live like this and have done for 5 years. We know plenty of other people who do to. We can’t all be imaging it!
  •

  • I just can’t do it

    Re-read the above. You CAN.
