And the winner is…..

A selection of our lovely round 2 video entrants!

Here’s the thing. I’m a little cynical by nature (Chris slightly less so, thankfully!) I’ve always been pretty sceptical when people say they’ve been ‘humble’d by something. To me it often just seems fake.

I would now like to say ‘I take it back!’

Inspiration and sex toys

My goodness have we been humbled by some of the inspiring stories we have read as part of our competition! (We’ve also had a few surprises. Who knew there were so many business ideas that involve ‘adult entertainment’?!)

Mostly we’ve been humbled by how determined you are to keep striving towards your dreams despite huge obstacles and slow progress. Humbled that you took the time to apply to our competition, and (even if it was just for the free flight!) say such generous things about us. And humbled at how lucky we are to be in a position to live life completely on our own terms. We’re so glad we have the opportunity to help a few of you with that.

This contest has touched us in ways we never imagined.

We received 78 applications from people who told us they are have uprooted themselves to the other side of the world; have overcome massive personal challenges; are up till 2am slowly building a business on the side of their 70 hour week jobs.
We sifted these down to 25, based on the clarity of the business idea, willingness to step up and how much we felt we could help.

The video challenge

Those 25 applicants then had another challenge- 3 days to send us a video on the theme of ‘Love Play Work’.

Twenty three of you took the time out to share your perspective on this.

We were treated to a day in the life of someone in Japan; a photo tour through the life and dreams of someone escaping last week’s hurricane in New Orleans; we had a demonstration of Parkour (did not know what this is before this competition!); thoughts recorded from a bathroom floor in Thailand, and artistically created ‘love, play, work’ signs. Check out below the beautifully crafted and captivating poem we have listened to again and again.

Winning our $300 program

Of those 25 we selected 10 people to win our ‘180 days to your office on the beach’ program for free. This is the program we’ve poured our heart and soul into and are actually really proud of. It’s packed with guidance to get you out of the life you don’t want and towards the one you do. We’ve added tons of value to it in the last month alone. There were certain applicants we thought would particularly benefit so they won this prize. We can’t wait to connect with them in our community forum.

The final three

We then had 3. Three exceptional applicants who proved to us that they had great ideas, commitment- and seemed lovely enough to hang out with for a week! We had Skype conversations with each of them over the weekend and narrowed it down to 2. And then we got stuck. Chris and I generally agree on most things- on this we couldn’t. And neither of us was budging. Oh dear.

The solution? Two winners! We Skyped them last night through a spectacular Mexican storm and shared the news. They were both pretty speechless!

Our winners

And here they are (coincidentally they both attended WDS in Portland this year, where the idea for this contest began yet we never met them!):
Hannah Kane our 1st Winner
Hannah Kane is from Portland, Oregon and runs a business which promotes the art and science of ‘play’ (a great fit with us!) She’ll be joining us this month in Mexico for 4 days of intensive business focus and fun. Be sure to check out her site
Mystery Winner
Second up is our mystery winner! Mystery because she will need to quit her job before she can go public, which is something she will now be getting underway! She and her husband will then join us in New Zealand or Australia for a few days to get her fantastic business idea off the ground.

Our two winners are at completely different stages, one already working part time on her business, the other not yet having a website or social media presence. We are excited about working with them in different ways and think their case studies will be really useful for many of you to follow.

Those of you who have won a prize you will have heard from us today. For those of you who weren’t successful this time, we were genuinely moved by the efforts you made and insights you gave us into your world.

Look out for special short video series we have filmed especially for you where we address the biggest questions and concerns you shared with us. You’ll receive your first email tomorrow.

For those of you who applied THANK YOU so much for being part of this!

For those of you who didn’t enter this time, use this as your starting point and get ready for when we run the competition again next year!

  3. I can’t say I’m not gutted to have missed out on the prizes, but I do want to chime in to say that people have said lovely things about you not because of the free flights, but because you are genuinely helping so many people to break out and live the lives they want.

As a subject close to my heart, I’m always impressed by the inspiration you pass on each and every day.

Thanks for the opportunity and, more importantly, thanks for the wisdom.

  5. That’s just typical of you, Hannah and Chris – awarding first prize to TWO lucky winners, instead of just one! They are both going to have a simply wonderful time with you. And the 10 runners up are also in for a treat – especially if you’ve added EVEN MORE value since I joined you for the 180 Days To Your Office On The Beach programme!

On a personal note, we’re going to be spending a week in LA in November, including 4 days at a music convention, so I’m looking forward to my first taste of location independence overseas!! :-)
