More holidays, less work; I’m not buying it
This was a ‘working’ holiday
Having more holiday time is not a myth. It is achievable and realistic. How can we be so sure? Well, because we’ve spent at least 4 months of each of the last 4 years away from our base in the UK. We don’t backpack, we don’t sleep in hostels, and we definitely don’t jeopardise our business. But we do get away from dreary winters and exchange our office view for a beach one pretty regularly.
It genuinely can be done.
Of course your life is probably very complex and you have all manner of obstacles in your way. That’s true for us as well. But if there is any part of you that thinks ‘I’d quite like my life to look like that’ then it’s time to laser in on what you can do. Remember, it can be a lot easier to focus on the limitations than the possibilities. The ability to catch a glimpse of what is possible and to use that as a homing beacon to guide all your actions and decisions is a precious gift indeed.
So your end destination is a more flexible, location independent lifestyle. Here are some ideas, if you haven’t quite got a business yet, and for those of you who do. They are just ideas to get you started, but if this is what you really want, NOW is a really great place to take the first step.
Properly employed folk:
Do you have a great business idea? Have you been rolling it around in your mind for a while, visualising all the possibilities and getting flutters of excitement in your tummy about what it could do for you?
If you have a business idea you need to come up with a name. You need to buy a domain name. Even if you haven’t got a clue how to do this, find out, all the info you need is online.
Before you do this, do some research. Use the ‘Google key word tool’ to see if people are searching for what you are planning to offer. See what words people are searching for and how much competition there is. Competition is good; if there is none, chances are the world hasn’t woken up to banana sculptures just yet. Try to incorporate the key words people most search on into your domain name if you can, like www.tricyclelessonfortheover70s.com or www.sendmychildtomars.org. You get the idea. Even if you change your mind later, once you have got the momentum it gets easier, like plates on sticks which keep spinning on their own.
Do this one thing. Make a start.
Don’t, however, quit your job. This is a sideline. You still need to earn a living. If you enjoy starting a small business enough to put your body and soul into it on evenings and weekends, the chances are you will stay motivated enough to make this a success. This isn’t an overnight fix, it’s a start. But it’s a start that will get you closer to where you want to get than just sitting around thinking about it will.
Now, business owners:
If you want to throw a laptop and shades in a bag and have a spell working aboard this year, follow these instructions. Pull up your calendar and choose 3 free weeks. This is not your annual holiday; this is a different 3 weeks. Now block out that time with ‘CONFERENCE’. When you are genuinely attending a conference you don’t double book the time, do you? Next, jot down some ideas you have wanted to develop, tasks you’ve needed to tackle but have never quite had the right space to do it. Next, decide which country you want to go to. Hot or cold? Coastal or city? Wilderness or cultural?
Chosen? Good. You’ve made an important commitment. It’s just going to flow from here. If you want to take the kids then it will need to fit with school breaks, or if you want your partner to join you for some of the time then co-ordinate (can’t hurt to have them see a different way of working and living, eh?) But this is manageable stuff. You guys are lucky, all you have to do is make the decision to make it happen and stick to it.
Don’t sell all your stuff and head to India. This is not necessary. We are talking about you taking your business to a different and more appealing location for some of the year. We are not talking about shedding your material wealth and braiding your hair. You still have a business to run. I’d just like you to be able to do it from time to time on a sunlit terrace or overlooking snowy mountains if that’s what your heart desires.
Wasn’t so hard, was it?
In terms of the myth- can you have more holiday time and still earn a living, yes or no? Well, if you want a business to come back to then you will need to take your laptop with you. Those margaritas won’t pay for themselves. But if you like what you do and can do it somewhere beautiful, to me, that’s as good as a holiday.
We have put some other tips in some super quick video clips filmed in (mostly) lovely locations, have a look here
